Murals in Music City

A guide to some of my favorite murals in Nashville. These make for fun and unique photo ops, and are quite impressive. Some might see murals as a touristy thing, but I appreciate the art and enjoy taking pictures with them.

This list is in no particular order, and definitely doesn’t even come close to covering all the murals in Nashville, but it’s a good start if you’re looking for a few to visit. I researched Nashville murals quite a bit before selecting the ones I wanted to visit, so these are some of my favorites around the city. They’re separated by area, and below you’ll also find a map with them all labeled.

East Nashville

img_1232What Lifts You – Hot Air balloon

  • Location: Side of The Cleo – 1034 W Eastland Ave, Nashville, TN 37206
  • Artist: Kelsey Montague

I discovered this mural on Instagram and added it to my bucket-list immediately. I love that it has the basket to “climb inside”. It’s a fairly new mural and very very large! So large, in fact, that it was the largest mural Kelsey painted in 2018.

I am obsessed with number and letter balloons when it comes to celebrations, so when I came across this mural I just had to go see it! It’s not very big, but I love the simplicity of it. It took a few tries to get a good photo without looking awkward, but I was pleased with the end result.

The Red Rose

Driving past this one, I turned around to go back and get a picture. It looked very bright and vibrant, and after researching I found it is a very new mural. It is based on a design by tattoo artist Adam “The Kid” Wakitsch. There’s a similar face at a different angle on his Instagram page. Galaz often does concert and other promotion murals for Muddy Roots Records. Typically his murals are temporary, replaced for the next show, but this one will probably stay considering it isn’t tied to any particular show.

img_1237Born in Tennessee

  • Location: 1000 Woodland Street
  • Artist: Eastside Murals project, signed “Out East Boys.”
  • Unfortunately, this Mural was destroyed in the Nashville Tornado in March 2020

This was another unexpected sighting I drove past and also went back to. I loved the vibrancy of the green (my favorite color) and the details in this one.

Mountain Dew was invented in the 1940s by Tennesseans Barney and Ally Hartman as a mixer for whiskey. The Mountain Dew name was trademarked for the Tennessee soft drink in 1948 and has continued to be used to this day. The original Mountain Dew slogan “it’ll tickle your innards” can be seen on this mural, along with the Memphis Pyramid, Nashville Batbuilding and the Knoxville Sunsphere.

The Gulch

Location: 302 11th Ave S, Nashville, TN 37203
Artist: Kelsey Montague

This is probably THE most popular Nashville mural. My sister-in-law and I got very lucky with no waiting in line, because we went on a Monday afternoon. We actually had to wait for someone to walk by to ask them to take our picture together. On the weekends there is always a line leading up to the wings, I’m talking like a 30-45 min wait kind of line. There’s also a set of mini-wings to the right, which are perfect for pups and kids!

img_6076The Colorful Geometric

The fun colors and patterns make for a great snap. It’s a very long mural, but that leaves room for multiple people to take pictures at the same time. I’ve been here twice, once on purpose and the other time on a tractor tour that stopped to take our pics.

12 South

img_6245Flower Wall

  • Location: Side of Green Pea Salon – 2900 12th Ave South
  • Artist: Unknown

I loved the detail and beauty of this mural! It’s like getting lost in a field of flowers in the city. The flower wall is unique in the fact that no artist or hashtag appears on the mural, so no one really knows who painted it.

img_6246Peace, Love, Good Deeds

  • Location: Side of Corner Music – 2705 12th Ave South
  • Artist: Eastside Murals
  • This Mural has now been replaced with the “Looking Pretty, Music City” Mural

I LOVED the colors and size of this mural! This is probably my all time favorite mural that I’ve seen. The website listed on the mural is no longer active, but at the time I went,  I researched and found out that the brand promotes “apparel with a purpose”, with a percent of proceeds going towards community organizations.

img_6390I Believe in Nashville

This iconic mural has been instagrammed over 1 million times! “I Believe in Nashville” represents unity and civic pride. The one pictured is the original “I believe in Nashville” mural. The other two murals are located on Marathon Music Works at 1402 Clinton St and on The Basement at 917 Woodland St.

img_6249Make Music not War

  • Location: Side of Epice – 2902 12th Ave South
  • Artist: Relax Max

I really liked the message this mural gives. Music makes up the heart of Nashville, which makes this one of the Nashville murals that really gets the vibe of the city.

img_6244Blue and White Wall

  • Location: Side of Draper James – 2608 12th Ave S, Nashville, TN 37204
  • Artist: Unknown

The simplicity of this striped wall caught my attention. The ocd part of me didn’t realize til I was home from Nashville, that I wasn’t standing in a stripe, but oh well!

This mural is conveniently located on the side of Reese Witherspoon’s store, Draper James. It’s a cute little store, and they treat you to sweet tea while you shop. How much more southern does it get?

img_606812 South Mural

  • Location: 2317 12th Ave S- Behind Taqueria Del Sol
  • Artist: Troy Duff (Story of mural here)

This mural was an unexpected discovery, and I quickly realized it is very different from others in the area. It’s more of a graffiti mural, but I still enjoyed seeing it.

Hillsboro Village

img_1247Pizza Wings

  • Location: Back of Pizza Perfect – 1602 21st Ave S.
  • Artist: Unkown

I love pizza, and after somehow finding a picture of these it was a must see mural for me! There are two sets of wings, these being the smaller, but the bigger ones are more shaded and harder to get a picture with.

Drippy Lips

I found this mural on Instagram, and it looked so chic and modern. I love the basic yet artistic look of it. These puckered, dripping, red lips have quickly became a new hot spot for photos.

img_1249

Hillsboro Village

  • Location: Side of Kay Bob’s – 2013 Capers Avenue, Nashville, TN 37212

I hated that there was a vehicle in the way, but this is on a side street so people are parked up and down it. This mural is actually a community mural, meaning the community helped paint it. You can watch the time lapse video of it here.

Sylvan Park

img_1256

img_1259Nashville Food

  • Location: Beside Richland Park – 388 50th Ave North, Nashville, TN 37209
  • Artist: Michael Cooper of Murals & More.

This is the most delicious mural I’ve ever seen, and by far the longest as well. The detail is astounding, especially on the letter ‘L’. Those cans looked like they were popping off the wall.

Downtown/Broadway

img_1970-1

img_1968-1Legends Corner

  • Location: Side of Legends Bar – 428 Broadway, Nashville, TN 37203
  • Artist: Tim Davis

This mural is on the side of a busy street, which makes taking a picture of it difficult. It’s got some of the famously known living ‘legends’ of country music.

From left to right: My man Tim McGraw, Loretta Lynn, Blake Shelton, Dierks Bentley, Willie Nelson, Taylor Swift, Johnny Cash, Keith Urban, Merle Haggard, Reba McEntire, Alan Jackson, George Strait, Dolly Parton and Garth Brooks.

I hope this list can be helpful for those of you visiting Nashville and wanting to find a few murals for a photo op. I know when researching myself, it was sometimes difficult to pinpoint a location.
